Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP) has adorned its shopping centres with creative decorations to celebrate Chinese New Year, including a giant Good Luck and Peace snack box. There will also be special shows and lucky draws to wish shoppers a happy holiday and promote tenants' business environment.
The Chinese New Year promotions follow a successful Christmas season, when the number of shoppers in SHKP malls in December increased by 20% over the previous year. Grand Century Place in Mongkok and The Sun Arcade in Tsim Sha Tsui recorded increases over 40%. Other major malls that saw big gains include New Town Plaza in Shatin, World Trade Centre in Causeway Bay, Metroplaza in Kwai Fong, Tsuen Wan Plaza, Landmark North in Sheung Shui, Tai Po Mega Mall and East Point City in Tsueng Kwan O.
SHKP's New Town Plaza is one of the busiest shopping centres in Hong Kong, and it is decorated with a giant snack box symbolizing good fortune for Hong Kong people to welcome the New Year.
The giant box is 60 feet across and has large decorations on top in the shape of Chinese New Year snacks. Inside the box is a paper cut gallery with over a hundred works depicting the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac. The works are by 276 paper cut artists from Hong Kong and the Mainland, and they include 'Gold Monkey presents Good Fortune' by Lu Xue, Chairman of the Chinese Art Paper Cutting Association.
Ho Lick Tin, Deputy General Manager - Retail Leasing with the Sun Hung Kai Real Estate Agency, said that paper cutting has a long history and is a traditional part of Chinese culture. Artists use their creativity and detailed planning to transform ordinary paper into thousands of patterns. In much the same way, a successful shopping mall needs careful planning and continuous creative input to anticipate market trends and offer a fresh experience to shoppers and retailers.
There will be 20 members from the Henan Shaolin martial arts community presenting Shaolin Kung Fu demonstrations during Chinese New Year in Tsuen Wan Plaza, New Town Plaza, Metroplaza, World Trade Centre, East Point City and Sun Yuen Long Centre.
Other performances will include puppet shows by the Hunan Puppet and Shadow Art Theatre and the Hong Kong Puppet and Shadow Art Society, Chinese music, lion dancing and feng shui seminars. A lucky draw for 72 gold monkeys will add fun to the New Year celebrations for shoppers.
Shoppers will be able to see the Marvelous Chinese Traditional Acrobatic Show and take part in the All City Grand lucky draw with fabulous prizes in 11 other malls: The Sun Arcade, Tai Po Mega Mall, Port Centre in Aberdeen, Chi Fu Landmark, Yuen Long Plaza, Yuen Long Landmark, New Jade Shopping Centre in Chai Wan, Metropolis Plaza in Sheung Shui, Greenfield Garden and Mayfair Garden in Tsing Yi and New Kwai Hing Centre.
Grand Century Place will present the Brother Bear Lunar New Year Fun Fair in conjunction with Walt Disney, and shoppers who spend HK$200 or more will be eligible to participate in games and lucky draws to win great prizes.
